Inspiration Station Vol 7: Sustainability

Today’s brands connect with people all over the world, influencing aspects of their everyday lives and often the choices they make; identifying with their interests for the sake of audience engagement. This edition looks at how tomorrow’s brands are upholding authenticity and accountability in a digital world where people are hypersensitive to fake news and empty gestures.

Here are our top 5 innovative ways brands are championing sustainability.

1. Earth Definition: The New Standard in Streaming

Streaming high-definition (HD) videos on your phone generates approximately 4x more emissions than standard definition.

Determined to raise awareness of this silent issue, Earthday.org and creative agency Hjaltelin Stahl (part of Accenture Interactive) have devised a campaign that shows how video streaming contributes to global carbon emissions. It encourages people to stream using standard definition, which it calls ‘Earth Definition‘.

2. Klarna: The Carbon Footprint Tracker

Klarna has added a feature to its service that gives users access to carbon footprint insights. To do so, it partnered with Doconomy to provide shoppers with an average kgCO2 value for each purchase. The partnership introduces CO2 data at global scale and is made available free of charge in the Klarna app.

3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Looop Island

Maisie Williams, known for her role in Game of Thrones as Arya Stark, is an avid Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan, and together with H&M’s Global Sustainability Manager, she has painstakingly built Looop Island, a special destination Animal Crossing players can visit. The Island will offer a chance to use unique tools like the clothing recycling device, the Looop Machine.

Designed with a sustainable theme, the island is Animal Crossing’s first clothing recycling station. An avatar version of Williams and Pascal Brun, Global Sustainability Manager, will appear on the game.

4. Fly Ranch

While Burning Man was canceled last year, their vision for sustainable transformation lives on through a new permanent space — Fly Ranch. Home to ten projects from artists, architects, designers, builders, and scientists, who have been challenged to integrate sustainable systems for energy, water, food, shelter, and waste management into works of art, in order to engage a global audience to work towards an eco-friendly future.

5. PopGrip Plant

Almost everyone has been offered a promotional PopSocket at an event, however, the newly released ‘PopGrip Plant’ is the eco-alternative to the classic phone grip. Made from ethically-sourced cornstarch, castor beans, and canola oil to generate fewer emissions during production and lifecycle, the brand hopes to inspire people to embrace the #smallstepsbigimpact challenge, which calls for small shifts in daily routines.
